The Mysore Palace is one of the largest, and of the most beautiful palaces not just in the region, but in the whole of India. The palace was built by the rulers of the Wodeyar dynasty. The palace has seen its own share of calamities, like the ravages caused by fire. The Mysore Palace was completed in the year 1912. On Sundays, and on national holidays, the entire structure is lighted up with light bulbs. The Palace is now a major tourist attraction, and it is open on all days of the week. The timings for visitors are from 10:00 am to 5:30 pm. If you want to see the palace at its illuminated best then you should visit the palace from seven in the evening to eight in the evening.


The Mysore has a wonderful collection of jewelry, works of art like paintings, and artifacts that have been made from wood.


Bidar Fort is another major tourist attraction in Karnataka. It is located about 40 kilometers from Gulbarga. It is very close to the river valley of the Manjira River. This fort was of great service to the Bahamani rulers from the period 1428-1489.


The fort was also captured by the Mughals. It is interesting to note that there are different types of palaces inside the complex of the fort, and it is quite interesting to visit these palaces. The Rang Mahal palace has beautifully carved wooden pillars, and the craftsmanship of the inlay work should be observed first hand. The red rock walls are in ruins but at the same time, they are there to remind the visitors of the ruins of the magnificent structure that once dominated the landscape.


Another major structure is the Bellary Fort, which was built by the ruler Hanumappa Nayaka, who belonged to the Nayaka dynasty. This fort was captured by Hyder Ali, the father of Tipu Sultan, in the year 1769. The fort was renovated by a French engineer, who was later hanged by Hyder Ali! There are two sections of the Bellary Fort, the upper section of the fort and the lower section of the fort.


The temples inside the complex of the fort, like the temple dedicated to Kote Anjaneya, are certainly worth visiting. This particular temple is dedicated to Lord Hanuman. During the evening certain sections of the fort are lighted up, it is a delightful sight to see.
