Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep is one of the most famous pilgrimage sites in Thailand. Located in the Chiang Mai province, this Buddhist temple attracts visitors from all across the globe. The temple is also known by the name of Doi Suthep, the name of the mountain on which it is situated. This site of tourist interest lies at a distance of 15 kilometers from the province. While on a visit to this place of tourist interest, you will also get to see spectacular vies of Chinag Mai. Considered a scared site by the people of Thailand, this one holds an equal amount of appeal among the international travelers as well.


Constructed in 14th century, this temple overlooks the city and its suburbs. If you are visiting the city on a clear day, you will get to see the temple and its golden chedi. This religious site is situated atop the Dhoi Suthep Mountain and at a height of 1601 meters. The road to this site of tourist interest goes through a rainforest passing several waterfalls on the way. This site of tourism is considered as one of the most respected Buddhist shrines in northern region of the South Asian country. The copper plated golden Chedi is the most holy place and the major highlight of the temple.


Attractions in Doi Suthep

While on your trip to Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep, you should take off your shoes and must be appropriately dressed. The temple features Buddha images, pagodas, temple bells, murals, and shrines. The White Elephant Monument and the Bell Tower are the chief attractions of this religious site in Thailand. The temple is also home to a model of an Emerald Buddha and a statue of the Hindu God Ganesh. The shrine bears an influence of aspects of Buddhism and Hinduism. You can reach Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep by taking around 309 steps featured at the base. The road to this place of tourist interest offers beautiful scenic views and features lot of photo opportunities. The temple forms a part of the Doi Suthep National Park that is home to around 330 species of birds along with Mon Tha Than Falls. The terrace of the religious shrine offering panoramic views of the city is borderd by large bells. Visitors in the belief of bringing good luck ring these bells. The northwest corner of the terrace features a statue of the legendary elephant believed to have chosen the temple site.


Reaching Doi Suthep

You can reach Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep by taking a road from Chiang Mai. You can reach the temple base from the car park by taking the 309 steps stairs. The stairs are adorned by green tress and is guarded by 16th-century Naga (snake) figures. You can also reach the pagodas within the premises through a cable car and back. The temple remains open throughout the year; entry to Doi Suthep costs around 30 baht.
