Lal Quila or the Red Fort is a marvelous monument which was built during the reign of the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan. This fort was built as a replacement capital palace when Emperor Shah Jahan decided to shift from Agra to Delhi. Delhi became the capital city with Red Fort as the capital fort.

This beautiful red monument was completed in the year 1648. The Lal Quila was the home of the royal family. It was called the “Qila- i- Mubarak”.

About the Lal Quila

This Mughal architectural wonder came into being after ten years of hard work. The massive fort was used mainly as a palace for the Mughal family. The Lal Quila showcases the various architectural experiments which were made as per the tastes of the Mughal Emperor. Shah Jahan, the Mughal Emperor, called this fort as the “Uru- Muhalla”.

The fort had a major role to play as the new capital of Shahjahanabad. This city is the seventh important city of Delhi. This fort lies along the banks of Yamuna River.

Special attractions of the Lal Quila

The Lal Quila is one of the most beautiful monuments of India. It is a Mughal architecture that showcases the talents of the builders of that era. A great wall covers the entire monument. This wall has two major openings. One of the openings or gates is known as the Lahore Gate, while the other gate is known as the Delhi Gate.

Naqqar Khana

Lal Quila consists of the Naqqar Khana which served as a drum house. This drum house played music five times a day during the Emperor’s reign.

Diwan- i- Am and Diwan-i- Khas

The Diwan- i- Am and Diwan- i- Khas are present inside the fort as important areas of the fort. These areas served the guests as per their importance to the Emperor.

Moti Masjid

This beautiful white mosque of the Lal Quila is one of its kind. It was the personal mosque of Emperor Aurangzeb. The Moti Masjid or the Pearl Mosque is a beauty that lies in the west of Hamam. The prayer hall of the mosque has beautiful black marble outlines.


The Hamam has three apartments which are linked to each other with internal corridors. The floral designs and the colored stone interiors further add a colorful touch to the apartments.

Present Day Lal Quila

Lal Quila is one of the most visited tourist locations in Delhi. Every year thousands of people come to visit this important attraction of Old Delhi. The Red Fort is a place of national importance. Every year the Prime Minister of India addresses the people of India on Independence Day.

The palace sheltered 3000 people before the British took over the great Lal Quila. The British made the Lal Quila an army capital. After Indian Independence, this fort was taken over by the Indian Army.

The Lal Quila is decorated with lights and the Mughal stories are told with sound effects in the evenings. It is indeed an attraction to people who love to discover monuments and the history behind these monuments. The majestic Lal Quila is sure to surprise you when you visit this Mughal beauty.
